Friends,

In the wake of Covid-19, job losses in rural India have been devastating, especially amongst daily-wage, migrant communities. This has strengthened my conviction that we need to change the status quo.

This Diwali, I am partnering with ATREE, a non-profit organisation, on whose Board I serve. ATREE has been working with tribal communities in the forests of Karnataka for over two decades.

ATREE is piloting a program, “Weeds to Wealth”, that trains tribal artisans to use lantana (an invasive forest weed) to make furniture, home accessories, and art installations. This is a win-win because it improves tribal livelihoods while promoting forest conservation.

The artisans are highly skilled, and ready to ramp-up lantana furniture and home accessories. All the hard groundwork has been done and ATREE is now poised to scale this up.

Money raised through this campaign will go towards setting up a social enterprise to scale this work and ensure both sustainable livelihoods, and forest conservation in more communities. I am helping them raise Rs 6 lakh: 1) Rs 3 lakh of working capital to take new orders 2) Rs 3 lakh to upgrade tools and infrastructure in order to scale production.

One good reason to donate now is that any donations made by Nov 15th will be matched by both Social Venture Partners, and GiveIndia.

Please donate generously through this trusted partner.

If you are keen to drive an initiative of your own and start a campaign to support rural daily-wage earners please write to anu.sridharan@atree.org.

Thanks for all your support,

Ravi
