Help ChalkLit train 10,000 teachers impacting 1 Million students in Chattisgarh
10M teachers teach 280M children in Indian schools. Although with time, the quality of education is improving in the public schools as well but the research says that there still exists a 100 year skill-gap between the students coming from the higher end private school system and the ones coming from the public school system. There are several factors, inside and outside the school environment which lead to this gap such as economic status of the families, educational background of parents, infrastructure facilities etc. But in order to cater to the current needs we need quick and effective solutions that can ensure that all our kids receive quality education irrespective of their economic and social backgrounds and receive the required skills to excel in life.
Time and again different models have proved that a dedicated and efficient teacher can change this scenario and despite many challenges which are not under his/her direct control, a teacher can make a huge impact in reducing this gap. So, how do we keep our teachers abreast with all the current technological and pedagogical advancements and provide them quick access to the resources that can help them teach the kids in the best possible manner? Traditional offline trainings have several inherent disadvantages - availability of quality trainers, infrastructure, time, budgets, scale, quality, convenience, or frequency required. The fast pace of changes globally requires continuous training of educators to update their conceptual and pedagogical knowledge.
For India to achieve its SDG 4 ambitions, the draft NEP 2019 acknowledges that teachers are the most fundamental agents of change in transforming the teaching and learning process to improve learning outcomes.
Million Sparks Foundation is a non-profit organization with an objective to impact teacher and school leadership capacity through continuous professional development at scale in collaboration with state education departments.
We provide a teacher capacity building platform and related services to impact the 10 million Government and low-income school teachers in India to improve their classroom practices by providing content, peer to peer micro-learning network, training on both scholastic and co-scholastic topics at scale, employing our award-winning mobile application platform- ChalkLit.
The platform is now being used in 6 states and has already impacted more than 2,00,000+ teachers and 13 million children through our offerings in 3 languages which are now being scaled to many more. We aim to reach 10 Million teachers and impact the life and learning outcomes of 300 Million children by 2025.
The technology based platform for teacher training has enabled us to work at scale at minimum costs. Hence, the impact that we are creating is significantly higher than other offline teacher training interventions. With our continued efforts in platform development, we have brought down the cost of training 1 teacher for an entire year to just Rs 1000.
About the Teacher Capacity Building Program in Chattisgarh
Due to staff shortage in the state and various challenges faced during deployment of teachers, Chattisgarh SCERT realized the need of upskilling of the teachers across disciplines and the need to provide them quick access to the resources for teaching and learning. It was also understood that the training and learning has to be a continuous process. The SCERT envisions to provide equitable education to all students from urban and rural backgrounds which is possible only by continuously supporting the teachers to engage students in the classroom better and create an enriching learning environment for every student in the classroom.
It is very important to provide concept and pedagogy based trainings to all teachers in order to ensure that student learning is impacted positively. Chattisgarh SCERT has collaborated with Million Sparks Foundation to provide these trainings to the teachers and build their capacity across disciplines so that they can cater to the varying needs of the schools and the students.
We have already conducted 11 scholastic trainings for the selected teachers in Chattisgarh and the teachers have had a steep learning curve owing to our program.
The positive shift that we have seen in the state has motivated us to now scale the program and provide it to other teachers in the state as well.
The Path Ahead
We are now trying to reach out to 10,000 new teachers in the state and provide the training program. As mentioned above, the cost of the program will be Rs 1000 per teacher for a period of one year. These teachers will be provided 6 trainings during the year and progress will be tracked on a regular basis. We are now seeking support from our community to help us scale this program.
Through this campaign we are looking to raise 10% of the total cost of this program and simultaneously are exploring multiple channels to raise the remaining funds.
