Help us curb Domestic Violence during the COVID pandemic
Upon first hearing of the lockdown, Aaliya’s world had come crashing down.
To simply imagine being stuck with her abusive husband 24/7 was as traumatizing as the frequent beatings and humiliations he would be inflicting on her.
That’s when she reached out to us.
We counselled her and her husband, helping them deal with their issues and emotions to ensure that peace was maintained and Aaliya could get relief from her never ending nightmare.
If more severe measures had to be introduced, SNEHA would help with those too. This is how SNEHA has been helping women in Mumbai’s urban informal communities for 20 years.
Working closely with State and local government bodies, we have formulated and executed numerous programs and initiatives at the grassroot level to effect true change. The COVID pandemic and the resultant lockdown has made our work even more challenging, as we are not able to reach the woman in person and open communication with her has become difficult.
Unlike how most people think, domestic abuse doesn’t have a single solution like filing an FIR or getting a divorce. Each case is different and has to be handled accordingly.
We assess risk through extensive counselling and then formulate appropriate safety plans by providing crisis counselling, psycho-education, pre-litigation counselling and counselling with the family on role education and negotiating complete non-violence from the perpetrator and getting the police involved ONLY in the most serious of cases, that too ONLY after consent from the victim.
Today, this process has to happen over calls. Which is why we urgently need to expand and upgrade our remote facilities.
This is what we need your help with.
Your donations will go to:
- Expanding our crisis intervention helplines
- Adding experienced and expert counselors to handle the increasing cases
- Protective gear for on-ground volunteers
- Creation of awareness material across online and offline mediums
Your support today can help plenty of women like Aaliya live a life of dignity and without fear.
Please donate generously.
