Pledge your support for impacted families of Cyclone Amphan & COVID-19 in slums of Howrah through Samaritan Help Mission
Samaritan Help Mission is a school that provides quality education to the economically disadvantaged students in an economically disadvantaged region. Ours is an extremely close-knit community where people pooled in their minimum resources to ensure that no one goes hungry.
A nationwide lockdown was implemented to flatten the steadily rising curve of COVID-19 cases in the country. However, the unforeseen nature of the decision brought everything to a halt. The disruption of economic activities meant the loss of livelihoods for migrant workers across the country. This destruction has compounded due to the cyclone.
Super cyclone Amphan has wrecked the states of West Bengal and Odisha, which was already battling with the COVID-19 pandemic.
700 families of Tikiapara in the Howrah district of West Bengal have been severely affected with infrastructural, crop and livestock losses. Samaritan Help Mission (SHM) had been working tirelessly to provide COVID-19 relief in the area and its vicinity. Unfortunately, all the resources mobilised by our team perished during the night of the storm. With no electricity or drinking water supply, hardships are increasing multifold for our people.
Our rapid response team of 100 volunteers were able to evacuate approximately 400 families and shift them inside a government school building. The team has been constantly working to stabilize the situation and arrange dry food items and face masks for those affected.
Your contribution will be directed towards providing relief kits to displaces communities and initiating the work of restoration.
As the nationwide cases of COVID-19 were on the rise, Tikiapara was declared as a Red Zone with most of its areas sealed completely. This area is also home to migrant labourers working in various districts of Bihar and West Bengal. With no stream of daily income flowing in, returning to their native lands was their only last resort left with them.
In this alarming situation, our team mobilised the available resources and people to help the affected from the slums of Tikiapara, Bankra, and adjoining areas in our own small ways. We believe that this is the time when we stand by each other and help to mitigate the consequences of these unprecedented times.
So far, we have managed to support 32,405 lives from 6,481 families. We are currently serving 12,500 patients and 150 elderly people. 2785 migrant workers have been able to reach their homes safely with our support.
Your valuable support will go a long way in bringing relief to the vulnerable communities of Tikiapara.
Your contribution will be directed towards:
- Adopting 20,000 migrant workers and their families to provide ration and Direct Benefit Transfers for survival.
- Providing Mobile Health Clinic dispensing free medical services and free medicine to the urban and rural pockets of Howrah district.
