The Problem

The current education system in our country is plagued by dismal standards, with heavy reliance on outdated pedagogical practices and memorisation.

As per the 'Centre for Budget and Governance Accountability', one in six elementary teachers is not professionally trained. The ASER 2018 report indicates that more than half of the Class 5 students cannot even read the Class 2 text or carry out a simple division problem.

What do we do?

We fundamentally believe that the only way to challenge the status quo is to reimagine the way how our children learn in classrooms.

Aavishkaar’s mission is to enable, equip & empower educators and students to rekindle their creativity, curiosity and critical thinking in Science and Math. We endeavour to make Science and Math experiential, hands-on/minds-on, engaging, immersive and accessible to all. Our core belief is that evidence-backed content that is rigorous and relevant can fundamentally transform the classroom experience for the child.

What are we raising funds for?

Project Prayog Bhoomi: Through our research and experience working with hundreds of schools and organisations across the country, we recognise the urgent need to shift the focus from teaching to learning in our classrooms and make learning easily accessible to the child with limited teacher intervention.

One of the ways that we think will make this possible is through a flipped learning curriculum, where the ownership of guiding the learning is transferred from teachers to students.

Prayog Bhoomi is a project aimed to scale our work to more schools across the country! The Flipped learning curriculum (FLC) is an attempt to make learning relevant and contextual for students, through a range of guided activities such as learning stations, games, visualisation & hands-on/minds-on activities. While there is no dearth of guided activities, our research shows a key gap in making such activities contextually relevant, low-cost, and accessible to all children irrespective of their academic levels.

Some of the intended outcomes of our curriculum are as follows:

  1. Each learner goes through the concepts at their own pace. Each learner has a choice in choosing the path, giving them a greater sense of ownership towards their learning.
  2. Each learner gets an opportunity to express their own prior knowledge and ask their own questions emanating from their interests & experiences.
  3. Learners get to discover the concepts on their own. That personal Aha! moment leaves a far deeper imprint than being told the discovery by the teacher (even if done in an interesting way)
  4. Learners can now learn by building on each other’s explorations and questions.
  5. Learners are focused on the tasks throughout the class. Even if there is apparent noise or chaos, children get to discuss, argue, debate and decide together about the topic at hand.

Our Intended Impact

Through this project, we wish to fundamentally shift the way how children learn Science and Math in classrooms. The first phase of the project intends to reach 1500 students across 10 Government schools with low-resources in Himachal, Assam & Bihar. In next five years, we aim to take Prayog Bhoomi to 100 schools across the country.

Our project not only aims to get 90% of students to perform at their Grade level competencies in Science and Math, but, is also focused on building Scientific thinking, curiosity and creativity.
