The Official Liverpool Supporters Club Mumbai (OLSC Mumbai) is fundraising to raise Rs. 300,000 (£ 3000), updated to Rs, 1,000,000 on 19 June to support the ‘Community Kitchen Project’ by The Khaana Chahiye Foundation to combat hunger during the COVID-19 crisis in Mumbai through long-term solutions.

Update:

Thank you for contributing so generously to our call for action!

We are happy to report that we have crossed our target and raised Rs. 3,00,000 on 14th June!

Considering the situation on the ground, we have decided to extend our help by updating the target to Rs. 1,000,000. Please continue to support us as we manifest the spirit of LFC.

The amount will fund the Community Kitchen vertical by Khaana Chahiye Foundation in Mumbai as a part of their Covid-19 relief efforts

Our funds will be utilized in this vertical:

  1. To buy utensils and essential cooking equipment: A community kitchen does not have the same capital like a restaurant. Our kitchens have been renting utensils necessary for cooking meals at a big scale. Owning these utensils will reduce some financial and logistical stress. Rs. 75,000 in the fund will be allocated to this component.
  2. For cooking meals: The Qureshi Nagar kitchen will be serving 1300 meals from 16th June owing to the increasing demand, especially among children and vulnerable populations like senior citizens, pregnant women and beneficiaries with no cooking apparatus at home. Rs. 2,25,000 will be used to serve meals in the area. Over 11,000 meals will be served starting 16th June.

●     About the Community Kitchen Project by Khaana Chahiye Foundation

Khaana Chahiye Foundation started as a relief operation during the COVID-19 lockdown in Mumbai. In the last year’s lockdown, they have served over 6 million cooked meals, 35,000+ grocery kits and aided 600,000 migrants stranded during the Covid -19 crisis in Mumbai.

As a commitment to the goal, the campaign formally registered as a non-profit organization in November 2020. In the last 1 year of its operations, Khaana Chahiye Foundation has mobilized 15 NGO partners, 18 kitchen partners to accomplish their goals.

In their quest to combat hunger in Mumbai, the organization has been engaging in advocacy efforts through its Hunger Map Project, an evidence-based policy intervention with the Brihan-Mumbai Municipal Corporation. This has enabled them to come up with effective long-term solutions for dealing with the issue of hunger.

Under this initiative, they have started two community kitchens in the city in collaboration with their local partners. Both the kitchens are run by all-women self-help group (known as bachat gats locally) from the slum cluster itself. The first kitchen was opened in Qureshi Nagar, Kurla which has been serving 300 meals daily and the second one is started in Govandi catering 500 meals. The team is currently finalizing compliance for the third kitchen.

●     Rationale behind this initiative

  1. Through the community kitchens, employment opportunities are created locally for women. The project aims at empowering women by providing them a sustainable model of livelihood.
  2. The food is cooked, packed and distributed by the kitchen locally to those who have lost their source of income and do not have any cooking apparatus.
  3. The short-term goal of the kitchen is to provide cooked meals free of cost until the local economy stabilizes. It can potentially work in a commercial capacity once the city returns to normalcy.
  4. Effectively limits the community's contact with outsiders such as Khaana Chahiye Foundation's on ground volunteers who might be potential risks for the dense neighborhood, given the current situation.

Here’s how you can help:

●     Contribute in monetary terms: your donation will be used in purchasing groceries, packaging material for both the kitchens

●     Unlike our restaurant partners, the Community Kitchen has a separate arrangement of compliances. We will use the donation amount in buying essential equipment such as weighing scales, utensils, packing machine, etc.

●     If you’re in Mumbai, you can also:

  1. Donate essential groceries to the kitchen which can be utilized in day-to-day cooking. (e.g., rice, wheat flour, oil, salt, sugar.)
  2. Sponsor packaging material and cooking equipment.

The goal of this fundraiser aligns with the value of the club’s ethos to support vulnerable communities in building their livelihoods. All donations will be used in exclusively paying for the materials to support the Community Kitchen.

(The fundraiser accepts both domestic and foreign contributions.)
